3D TV, Sit and drool

’3D’s a revelation in TV. It’s a brand new way of telling stories. It’s also an opportunity to show sport in a totally different way.’

While we at Malaysia only started admiring the technology of high definition TV (HDTV) broadcast (astro beyond) some of the people abroad started ‘wow’ing to the latest technology of 3D tv broadcasting via a Sky 3D. Arsenal vs Man Utd game became the first live telecast of this latest technology. The’ll start a dedicated Sky 3D channel somewhere in April this year.

The technology basically replicates how human’s eyes see things. So the concept was applied by coupling two camera pointing the same direction. So the result, pretty much the same vision of human eyes. That creates the 3 dimensional view. That’s the easiest way to understand the concept.

Actually the idea of broadcasting football in 3D strangely came from the movie ‘Avatar’. Brian Lenz, Sky’s director of product design, learns a lesson from Vince Pace, the main technician behind James Cameron’s film and went behind the scene to see how it is made. That’s the benefit of sharing!

Just imagine watching a game in your living room but having a feeling that you’re there inside the stadium, on the pitch! I’m not so sure how realistic the display is but I’m sure it’s not to the extent of you feel like the ball’s coming your way and start dodging here and there. But it will be much cooler if they can pull that one off. Sure the stadium’s attendance rate will go down.

The only setback I could think of is the fact that you need to wear the special 3D glasses which is not very convenient. But I think they’re working on that, maybe in a near future there’s no need to wear the specks anymore.

And yeah you’ll definitely need to pay a good price for this. It won’t come cheap realistically. Imagine how much camera they need to set in order to capture the moments in a 3 dimensional way as possible. That surely adds to the cost.

So, just hope that this technology will arrive here in Malaysia ‘soon’. I’m quite sure it takes time actually. A good few years perhaps?

        already Astro users had to forkout some money to change to HDTV and new decoder to tune to Astro beyond! Surely this 3D tv broadcasting will cost us some more $$$. Still i’m happy watching EPL the way it is now – no need for high defination TV or 3D for whatever advantage that it have. Lagipun, it will never be same like watching inside the stadium. Simpan duit for trip to UK lo….

          @Papa-Roq,
          that’s what technology does, always finding a better way of doing things
          it may come close, but it will never be the same…
          yeah, i’m happy with the current one as well
